We could either use alternatives on the register read or handle the undef. Will

More generally, it would leave future potential for having to work out whether to apply alternatives to read an ID register to work out whether we need to apply alternatives for some feature within. I also can't even begin to fathom how such a thing would interact with the heterogeneous feature sanity-checking. I think trapping the undef is the only viable approach.
