The "argc" and "argv" names made sense when the struct was argv_array,
but now they're just confusing. Let's rename them to our usual "nr" and
"items" (which we use for string_list, as well as many ALLOC_GROW()
arrays).

Note that we have to update all of the callers immediately. Playing
tricks with the preprocessor is hard here, because we wouldn't want to
rewrite unrelated tokens.

I'm actually not that fond of "items". I almost went with just:

  const char **v;

as the variable name which contains it usually provides sufficient
context. But I worried that people would consider that too inscrutable.

I'd agree that v[] is a good name. If it is too short, I can live
with item[], but not with items[]. Clearly we are mostly accessing
one element at a time much more often than treating the set as a
whole, so signaling "there are multiple things in the set" with
a plural name is much less important than being able to say item[4]
to name the 4th item in the collection.

What are individual component of a vector called? An element? If
so, elem[] would be much better name than item[].

I'd worry that "item" versus string_list "items" would be unfriendly
(though I am not opposed to changing string_list to match).

Your "elem" suggestion from elsewhere may be better still, but if you
are OK with "v", that is my preference. I'll see if anybody else chimes
in, but if not, then I'd probably switch to that. :)

Individual components of a string vector or a string array are
strings, so "str" if we abbreviate "string" to "str".

Using "str" would be consistent with oid_array where the individual
component is called "oid" as it is defined this way:

struct oid_array {
        struct object_id *oid;
        size_t nr;
        size_t alloc;
        int sorted;
};

Yeah, I agree "str" is a reasonable name, and probably better than
"elem" or "items". I do still like the super-concise "v" better, though.

One problem with names like "str", "string", and "oid" is that it
leads to this stupid pattern:

    struct oid_array *oid;
    oid_to_hex(oid->oid[0], ...);

We know the thing is object name by the pointer variable having the
name oid already---there is no need to repeat we are talking about
oid again with the field name.

So, "str" being consistent with "oid_array" is not necessarily a
plus.

Ultra-concise v[] that stands for value, or e[] that stands for
element, do not share this problem.

One plus about the redundant field name is that it is easier to run

    grep -E -e "([.]|->)oid"

but I do not know how important that is.
