This patch contains a new network driver for the network unit of the
ARM Marvell Armada 370 and the Armada XP. Both SoCs use the PJ4B
processor, a Marvell-developed ARM core that implements the ARMv7
instruction set.

Compared to previous ARM Marvell SoCs (Kirkwood, Orion, Discovery),
the network unit in Armada 370 and Armada XP is highly different. This
is the reason why this new 'mvneta' driver is needed, while the older
ARM Marvell SoCs use the 'mv643xx_eth' driver.

Here is an overview of the most important hardware changes that
require a new, specific, driver for the network unit of Armada 370/XP:

 - The new network unit has a completely different design and layout
for the RX and TX descriptors. They are now organized as a simple
array (each RX and TX queue has base address and size of this
array) rather than a linked list as in the old SoCs.

 - The new network unit has a different RXQ and TXQ management: this
management is done using special read/write counter registers,
while in the Old SocS, it was done using the Ownership bit in RX
   and TX descriptors.

 - The new network unit has different interrupt registers

 - The new network unit way of cleaning of interrupts is not done by
writing to the cause register, but by updating per-queue counters

 - The new network unit has different GMAC registers (link, speed,
duplex configuration) and different WRR registers.

 - The new network unit has lots of new units like PnC (Parser and
Classifier), PMT, BM (Memory Buffer Management), xPON, and more.

The driver proposed in the current patch only handles the basic
features. Additional hardware features will progressively be supported
as needed.

This code has originally been written by Rami Rosen
<rosenr@marvell.com>, and then reviewed and cleaned up by Thomas
Petazzoni <thomas.petazzoni@free-electrons.com>.

This should be more specific such as "marvell,armada-xp-neta".

Or use 370 instead of xp. It should be which ever chip came first.

Drop this. device_type is not used for FDT.

Should be ethernet@...

Thanks for your comments. Will fix in v3.

Since these are module params they need the driver name prefix when referenced
in the kernel command line, so there should be no need for another "mvneta"
prefix.

Too bad "val" isn't one character shorter.

You can test "if (count++ >= MVNETA_RX_DISABLE_TIMEOUT_MSEC) {". Nobody
will notice.

The length of the MVNETA prefix is a self inflicted pain.

Never. You must disable queueing before it's too late.

Neither. You drop the packet, update the stats and return ok.

Why is it not done in napi context ?

Is this really useful? The name of this network unit in Marvell is
simply "neta", and since it is associated with the vendor name Marvell
in the compatible string, it is actually unique: "marvell, neta".

The thing is that this unit is used in Armada 370, Armada XP, but also
other SoCs (which I am not sure are announced publicly as of today). So
if possible, we would prefer to keep the proposed "marvell, neta" name.
We could also change it to "marvell,ebu-neta" where EBU stands for
Embedded Business Unit, just like the "ebu" in arch/arm/mach-mvebu/,
but it sounds more logical to have just "marvell, neta".

Thanks again for your review,

Thomas

I agree with Francois on most of these. I prefer readability over hard
80 column limits. Although, 80 columns is still sound guidance. For
example, a majority of the broken lines are due to long macro and
constant names. I did a 'git grep NETA' and didn't see anything
alarming. So, above could become

			val |= rx_filled << NETA_RXQ_ADD_NONOCC_SHIFT;

thx,

Jason.

Sure, but checkpatch.pl is warning on every line exceeding the 80
columns. Not that I think that all checkpatch.pl warnings should
necessarily be religiously respected, but if you have gazillions of
warnings regarding line exceeding 80 columns, it is very likely that
you will miss more important warnings.

I don't mind, but then I would like to keep things consistent:

 * The driver file would be neta.c

 * All functions and data structure would be prefixed neta_ and not
   mvneta_

 * The Kconfig option would become CONFIG_NETA. Do we really want such
a "simple" Kconfig option name for a driver?

Also, this is entirely not consistent with the existing mv643xx_eth
driver, which has kept the "mv" part of the prefix.

Maybe the fact that those long macros are making long lines is also due
to the code having sometimes a too deep indentation, and I need to fix
that by using more auxiliary functions or something like that?

Thanks,

Thomas

./scripts/checkpatch.pl --ignore LONG_LINE ...

Will yield the 'more important' warnings/errors. After those are
cleared, you can run without --ignore to check for over-indentation,
etc.

Well, you could do mv_neta.c and CONFIG_MV_NETA, but at the end of the
day, we were both trying to put lipstick on a pig. Your last paragraph
is the most important.

This is the intent of the 80 column warning. Please review the patch
for over-indentation, and consider shortening the macros, eg
MVNETA_RXQ_ADD_NONOCC_SHFT.

thx,

Jason.
