The work queue may execute after the device is suspended, leading to
SDIO register I/O over a suspend and resume of the system. With a
WARN_ON in mwifiex_write_data_to_card we see:

Test environment is an OLPC XO-4 doing one sleep every few seconds,
with the device configured to wake the system, with constant ping by
another host. Kernel is 3.5 with many backported mwifiex patches.

We also see that an SDIO interrupt from the device may occur after all
devices are suspended, leading to a similar symptom:

[ 1292.887221] PM: suspend of devices complete after 21.990 msecs
[ 1292.922632] PM: late suspend of devices complete after 35.403 msecs

I don't know how to fix this one yet; I don't know why the SDHCI
transaction fails, given the clocks remain running.

To understand what is happening here could you apply attached debug patch to generate logs, or enable dynamic_debug for that?

I guess the driver and firmware are out of sync here. If firmware is sleeping we will get this failure.

Are you able to get an SDIO Bus Analyzer capture?

If we can find the root cause and fix it, this change won't be necessary.

Thanks, will add that to plan for next work on the ticket.

I'm a little alarmed at this possibility. What you say implies an
interrupt from the device arrives after the firmware is in host sleep
mode, yet the device is not available to take the read mp_regs
transaction. Have I understood correctly?

We never see this "mmc0: Timeout ..." _except_ when the host has gone
through suspend and resume, so it seemed more likely to be caused by
SDHCI.

No, sorry, I don't have such equipment.

Okay. How will the work queue not be executed?

No, that depends on that wakeup (device to host) is through GPIO or SDIO interface.
In case of SDIO wakeup, does the MMC call driver's interrupt routing first or resume handler first?
If MMC calls driver's ISR first, we will see an interrupt arrives after firmware is in host sleep mode.

I overlooked this SDHCI error. So it could be the reason why read mp_regs failed.

Actually I can take this change before we figure out what the real problem is.
For other users without this problem this code shouldn't get executed during suspended.
Please resend it as a [PATCH].

Here's a dynamic_debug log.

Note the point of failure is the "mmc0: Timeout waiting for hardware
interrupt." message, which occurs in the driver SDIO interrupt
function, which began execution in a critical time period after driver
suspend but before platform suspend.

We use a GPIO to wake from WLAN.

gpio:0xff --> This configures firmware to use SDIO interface to wake up host.
Could you change the gpio parameter to the actual GPIO pin number (from 8787 point of view)?

I was expecting that mwifiex_sdio_resume handler is called before the SDIO interrupt function is called.

You're right, and I'm quite wrong. Sorry about that. I misread our
code.

Correction, we use SDIO to wake from WLAN.

We set gap to 0xff, which we think is a special value that means the
device will wait for the host to acknowledge before sending data to
the host.

Looking through history of development, we thought that this would
avoid a race condition, where the host starts to suspend, configures
the device for host sleep, but the device may wake in the time before
the host suspends.

We don't see this "mmc0: Timeout waiting for hardware interrupt."
problem unless we use WPA2. It does not reproduce on an open access
point.

Yes, gap=0xff should be used. Actually I also have the patch to set gap to 0xff queued in my local tree. I will send it upstream.

With WPA2 enabled, does the "mmc0 timeout" happen in every suspend attempt?

Thanks. Today I have been testing with gap 50ms and no longer able to
reproduce the "mmc0: Timeout waiting for hardware interrupt." problem.

No, it is rare, of the order of one in every 6000 attempts, and depends
on the timing of arriving packets. Our reproducer uses a ping ramp,
with interval varying from 0.1 to 0.9 seconds with 50ms increment, and
this brings the problem frequency down to about one in 200 attempts.

The OLPC XO-4 by default tries to suspend automatically when user is
idle, which is why we notice the problem.

Hmm, that's interesting.
The concern of none-0xff gap was that the SDIO interrupt could come in without acknowledgement from host. As long as XO-4 system (specifically mmc subsystem) can wake up within 50ms you are fine.

Good to know.
