Which is not _quite_ true; it _does_ change functionality if applied 
without the first patch.

Can you modify the wording here like
'As we're not using the standard asynchronous probing mechanism we can 
merge the two functions'

How about changing the wording into "this patch by itself does not change
any functionality"?
