We've implicitly supported .git/objects/* content of symlinks since approximately forever, and when we do a copy of the repo we transfer those over, but aren't very consistent about other random stuff we find depending on if it's a "hidden" file or not. Let's add a test for that, which shouldn't read as an endorsement of what we're doing now, just asserts current behavior.
