To avoid some of the problems of git pull Linus Torvalds suggested a configuration pull.merge [1], however, instead of having pull.merge and pull.rebase, we can have pull.mode which works for both. Many people have argued that `git pull` should have a per-branch configuration for its mode of operation (e.g. Linus Torvalds [1] and Theodore Ts'o [2]). branch..pullMode achieves that.
