Commit 9275277d5324 ("drm/i915: use pat_index instead of cache_level") has
introduced PAT indices to i915 internal APIs, partially replacing the
usage of driver internal cache_level, but has also added a few
questionable design decisions which this patch tries to improve upon.

Principal change is to invert the per platform cache level to PAT index
table which was added by the referenced commit, and by doing so enable
i915 to understand the cache mode between PAT indices, changing them from
opaque to transparent.

Once we have the inverted table we are able to remove the hidden false
"return true" from i915_gem_object_has_cache_level.

We also replace the enum i915_cache_level with i915_cache_t, composed of
a more detailed representation of each cache mode (base mode plus flags).

For instance this way we are able to express the difference between WB and
1-way coherent WB on Meteorlake. Which in turn enables us to map the i915
"cached" mode to the correct Meteorlake PAT index.

We also cache PAT indices of the caching modes used by the driver itself
in struct drm_i915_private, which eliminates the runtime calls to
i915_gem_get_pat_index from both high- and low-level i915 components.

We also remove the incorrect references to enum i915_cache_level from low
level PTE encode vfuncs, since those are actually given PAT indices by
their callers.

Finally we are able to replace the platform dependent cache mode to string
code in debugfs and elsewhere by the single implementation based on
i915_cache_t.

The opens are around correctness of the inverted tables added in
i915_pci.c in terms of whether the "flavour" (coherency) of WB modes is
correct for different platforms.

And second one probably if I haven't over-complicated something that could
actually be expressed or implemented in a simpler way.

Need to check L3 flag as well? The original code has L3_LLC.

I think i915->pat_wt is needed as well, because display driver has code like this,
HAS_WT(i915) ? I915_CACHE_WT : I915_CACHE_NONE

How did you handle functions like initial_plane_vma() and i915_gem_object_pin_to_display_plane()?

1-way

PVC access is always coherent, it should have 1-way for [5] and [7] as well.

Don't think so, because I have:

   [2] = __I915_CACHE(WB, BIT(I915_CACHE_FLAG_COH1W) | BIT(I915_CACHE_FLAG_L3)), \

So L3 and COH1W are both set for the equivalent of old I915_CACHE_L3_LLC, meaning I915_CACHING_CACHED will be returned for either - same as old code.

They have:

	i915_gem_object_set_cache_coherency(obj, HAS_WT(i915) ?
					    I915_CACHE_WT : I915_CACHE_NONE);

Where HAS_WT is equal to HAS_EDRAM. So it is not always WT. I don't have the history/background of that but that is how it is.

So I could add i915->pat_wt but a) I don't think it is right for display (display would need more like i915->display_pat), and b) there would be no call sites for it.

i915->display_pat (or display_cache actually) would be similar to how I added i915->cache, not be best name I know, but it is replacing many occurrences of:

   cache_level = HAS_LLC(mem->i915) ? I915_CACHE_LLC : I915_CACHE_NONE;
   i915_gem_object_set_cache_coherency(obj, cache_level)

I am unsure what would be the proper name for i915->cache, which would make it correctly self-documenting?
