I had to reread the code several times to understand your patch. I am not saying that your patch is wrong, the code is ugly and not easy to understand. However I have to point out that you treat the symptom than the real cause. The real cause was the code that assumes that the 'allowed' contains *only* one of BTRFS_BLOCK_GROUP_*. This was not true from a very long time but only in a very specific case it raised an error. My suggestion is to: - explicitly add all other missing case (DUP, SINGLE....) - add a further 'else' branch to signal an un-handled case, something like else { btrfs_error( /* error message */ ); allowed = /* safe default ??? */ } Or if you are brave enough, replace the if(s) with an iterate over the btrfs_raid_array[] taking the one with an highest priority (may be you need to add a "priority" field to array). Finally, but this is definitely outside the scope of your patch, I think that the logic used by btrfs is basically wrong: currently, when you interrupted a balancing in a less safe direction (e.g. raid1 -> single), the next block allocation is done in the opposite direction. More "strange" result would be if you does several interrupted balances with different profiles... And now reading the code it seems to me that if the default profile is RAID1C4, and only *one* disk is filled, then the system go to a SINGLE profile... Why doesn't try a RAID1C3 ? Better would be store explicitly somewhere the "default" profile (accessible via a sysfs filed) and their 2nd choices; eg if the user selects a RAID6 profile, the options should be: $ cat I mean I wouldn't call that treating the symptom - the whole point of the if tree *is* to set only one of BTRFS_BLOCK_GROUP_* on `allowed` :). But, indeed, the code is awful and brittle, as this turned up. It's somewhat of an edge case - further up in `btrfs_reduce_alloc_profile` we *do* check if there's a pending balance and use the target there, interrupting a balance isn't really a common thing, and while its supported its expected that you move towards finishing it sooner rather than later (and the userspace tools shove warnings in your face to remind you to do so). > And now reading the code it seems to me that if the default profile is RAID1C4, > and only *one* disk is filled, then the system go to a SINGLE profile... BTRFS shouldn't "make up" a profile that the user didn't set, that just adds yet another profile that the user will need to balance to get rid of and move to a consistent profile. > Better would be Changes from v1: Reordered the preference list and rewrote the commit message to be more useful. Callers of `btrfs_reduce_alloc_profile` expect it to return exactly one allocation profile flag, and failing to do so may ultimately result in a WARN_ON and remount-ro when allocating new blocks, like the below transaction abort on 6.1. `btrfs_reduce_alloc_profile` has two ways of determining the profile, first it checks if a conversion balance is currently running and uses the profile we're converting to. If no balance is currently running, it returns the max-redundancy profile which at least one block in the selected block group has. This works by simply checking each known allocation profile bit in redundancy order. However, when RAID1C3/RAID1C4 handling was added, `btrfs_reduce_alloc_profile` was not updated to check for the new flags. Because of the way it checks, if we have blocks with different profiles and at least one is known, that profile will be selected. However, if none are known we may return a flag set with multiple allocation profiles set. This is currently only possible when a balance from RAID1C* to the other RAID1C* profile is canceled after allocating at least one block using the new profile. In that case, a transaction abort like the below will occur and the filesystem will need to be mounted with -o skip_balance to get it mounted rw again (but the balance cannot be resumed without a similar abort).
