I would just put that back in the generic structure and add a note saying it's only used for the SPI users of the core structure. This allows to share most of this driver for the ltc2496 driver added in the next commit that is an SPI variant of the ltc2497. Also generalize the entry in MAINTAINER to cover the newly introduced files.
