Isn't it much more understandable if you just do an 'old-fashioned' thing like: if (std & A) { /* do whatever needs to be done to set the std to A */ } else if (std & B) { /* do whatever needs to be done to set the std to B */ } /* etc. */ It's also easier to comment the code in that case.
