Recently genphy_read_abilities() has been added that dynamically detects
clause 22 PHY abilities. I *think* this detection should work with all
supported PHY's, at least for the ones with basic features sets, i.e.
PHY_BASIC_FEATURES and PHY_GBIT_FEATURES. So let's remove setting these
features explicitly and rely on phylib feature detection.

I don't have access to most of these PHY's, therefore I'd appreciate
regression testing.

The nice thing about the features is that we can right away tell which
PHY entries are Fast Ethernet/Gigabit etc... so if you remove that
assignment, we would need at least a standardized comment allowing us to
quickly grep for that information.

Yes, that gets lost. Well, in a lot (most?) of cases you still have it in
the name. But who needs this information what for? At runtime e.g. ethtool
tells what's supported. And for all PHY's w/o dedicated driver that are
using the genphy driver you don't know anyway.
For c45 PHY's this would become even more tricky as they can support much
more speeds.

Hi Heiner

We could make this a two step process, to avoid regressions. For one
cycle compare genphy_read_abilities() against .features and raise a
WARN_ON() if they differ. And keep using the .features value.

Then a release late, complete the swap removing .features and the
WARN_ON.

How about testing first, then merging? I suggest breaking this out
into individual patches that can be Tested-by.

Thanks,
Richard

in general this is a good idea. I say in general because this would fail
with several, if not most GBit PHY's. Reason is that the hardcoded
features currently pretend we're supporting 1000BT/Half, whilst several
PHY's don't support this mode. 1000BT/Half has been specified but never
really been used. If we see it from this angle, the series is actually
a fix. The feature detection uses very basic C22 registers/bits,
therefore I consider the risk of breaking something to be relatively low.
And just in case we have the rc phase to fix support for a broken PHY.

Splitting the series and waiting for a Tested-by, as proposed by Richard,
may be problematic because most PHY drivers don't have a dedicated
maintainer, and we lack the hardware to test.

Well, we could split out those we know are likely to get tested. I
have a number of boards with Marvell devices i can test. Florian has
Broadcom boards. I also have a couple of boards with Micrel KSZ8041,
which would be interesting because they are Fast Ethernet. Bootlin can
test some of the mscc PHYs.

We also might want to get some targeted testing. The microchip_t1.c
could be interesting, since it is a T1 device. There was another T1
added in the last year, but i forget which.

Just doing this testing might give us an idea if we really should
expect problems.

Great. Could you also test based on the series and the provide a
Tested-by for the PHY's which have been tested? Even if I split out
let's say the Marvell PHY driver, most likely just few of all the
supported Marvell PHY's can be tested.

The T1 PHY driver isn't included in this series. It uses another
feature constant: PHY_BASIC_T1_FEATURES

Sure. I tested and applied this change to the Realtek PHY driver
already.

This appears to need to be done differently.

A question was asked as to why fast ethernet PHY identification from the
source is important, well I'd say it's important for someone working on
the PHY code to see how "all fast ethernet PHY drivers do or handle X"

:-)

Then, what we could do: Change all occurrences of
.features = PHY_XXX_FEATURES
to
/* PHY_XXX_FEATURES */

Would this be an acceptable option?

Yes absolutely, I was not thinking about anything more complicated than
that, should have made it more obvious in my replies. Thanks!
