The TSN endpoint Ethernet MAC is a FPGA based network device for
real-time communication.

It is integrated as Ethernet controller with ethtool and PTP support.
For real-time communcation TC_SETUP_QDISC_TAPRIO is supported.

The device supports multiple TX/RX queue pairs. The first TX/RX queue
pair is used by the driver. All other TX/RX queue pairs shall be used
directly by real-time applications. Each TX/RX queue pair has its own
register set in a separate physical page and can be operated without any
driver interaction. This enables the direct use of TX/RX queue pairs by
real-time and/or safety applications running
- on dedicated CPU cores without any operating system
- on dedicated CPU cores with a separate operating system
- in user space without any Linux kernel interaction

The additional TX queues support timed transmission. The TX descriptor
ring contains relative timing information for every Ethernet frame.
Every TX descriptor defines the transmission time of the next frame with
an increment for the current transmission time (it does not define the
transmission time of its own frame). This way, the controller knows in
advance when a frame will be transmitted and can delay the fetching of the
descriptor and the frame as long as possible. Therefore, a frame can be
assigned to a descriptor as late as possible and the data can be as
up-to-date as possible, which is ideal for closed loop control. The
relative timing information of the next frame requires a periodic schedule
for frame transmission which is known in advance. This is usually the case
for time triggered real-time systems. E.g., for EtherCAT this mode of
timed transmission is used since 2011.

This driver provides a driver specific interface in tsnep_stream.c for
direct access to all but the first TX/RX queue pair. There are two
reasons for this interface. First: It enables the reservation or direct use
of TX/RX queue pairs by real-time application on dedicated CPU cores or
in user space. Second: The periodic schedule for timed transmission does
not fit to TC_SETUP_QDISC_ETF. ETF supports absolute transmission times
which are not known in advance and that is in stark contrast to relative
transmission times which are known in advance. Therefore, ETF cannot be
implemented with this controller. Additionally, this interface is used
for hardware testing.

This probably means you have something wrong with your architecture.
The core mdio layer will serialise access to the mdio bus. So you
should not need such locks.

And this might be why you have these locks?

A MAC driver should never directly touch the PHY hardware. Use the
phy_loopback(phydev) call.

It appears your MDIO bus can only do C22. Please add a test for C45 and return -EOPNOTSUPP.

I _think_ this is wrong. They way the PHYs are chained means you
should not need to do this, the xgmiitorgmii_read_status() does it.
Maybe you have the chaining setup wrong?

phy_connect_direct() returns an error code. Use it, rather than
changing it to something else. This applies everywhere. You must have
a good reason to change error codes, and then it is wise to put a
comment why you change it.

You should not be accessing the phydev directly. Use
phy_remove_link_mode(phydev, ETHTOOL_LINK_MODE_1000baseT_Half_BIT),
etc.

This is where i think GMII2RGMII goes wrong. MAC phy-handle should
point to the GMII2RGMII device in DT. The GMII2RGMII should have a
phy-handle which points to the PHY.

The PHY driver is in control of the PHY, not the MAC. Please remove.

Hi Gerhard

I expect you will get a lot of push back with a character device in
the middle of an Ethernet driver. One that mmap the Tx/Rx queue is
going to need a lot of review to make sure it is secure. Maybe talk to
the XDP/AF_XDP people, there might be a way to do it through that?

So i strongly suggest your drop tsnep_stream.c for the moment. Get the
basic plain boring Ethernet driver merged. Then start a discussion
about a suitable API for exporting rings to user space.

Hi Gerhard,

Thank you for the patch! Perhaps something to improve:

I will try to use phy_loopback(phydev) . Thanks for the advice!

You are right. I will add that check.

Ok, I will do that.

I also expect some discussion about this feature. Mapping device specific
TX/RX queues to user space is not done in mainline Linux so far. It is done
out-of-tree for real-time communication since years. It enables interrupt free
(hard and soft IRQ) zero copy communication without any context switch
between kernel space and user space. This is ideal for real-time. It is similar
to UIO, but with DMA support and only for some TX/RX queues and not for
the whole device.

If the mmap of TX/RX queue can be done by any user space program, then
it might not be secure. The mmap of TX/RX queue will be done by the
real-time application and the real-time application needs to be privileged
anyway (SCHED_FIFO, mlock, ...). So for the real-time use case I don't see
any security problem.

There are some reasons for not using XDP/AF_XDP:
- XDP/AF_XDP does not support timed transmission and this device has
a very special style of timed transmission (schedule with relative timings
for DMA start and transmit time within descriptor ring, the relative timings
define the timing of the _next_ descriptor/frame)
- XDP/AF_XDP requires Linux and the additional TX/RX Queues of this
device are designed to be used also by other CPU cores which do not run
  Linux
- XDP/AF_XDP needs hard and/or soft IRQ processing

I will follow your suggestion and drop tsnep_stream.c for the moment.
Any early comments about this feature are welcome, because the direct
use of additional TX/RX queues for real-time communication is the main
feature of this device.

That is probably not quite true. I expect GPUs do it, or at least
something very similar.

I know enough to know i don't know enough about cache management from
user space to be able to make any sensible recommendations.

You probably want to start a discussion with the XDP people and get
them to agree XDP does not work for your use case. Also, the people
who implemented zero-copy, MSG_ZEROCOPY and make sure that is also
unsuitable. Then see if you can reuse some GPU code which has been
well reviewed and tested. You will get less pushback that way,
compared to your own code which will need a good review by somebody
who understands all the issues.

+/* TSN endpoint Ethernet MAC driver
+ *
+ * The TSN endpoint Ethernet MAC is a FPGA based network device for real-time
+ * communication. It is designed for endpoints within TSN (Time Sensitive
+ * Networking) networks; e.g., for PLCs in the industrial automation case.
+ *
+ * It supports multiple TX/RX queue pairs. The first TX/RX queue pair is used
+ * by the driver. All other TX/RX queue pairs shall be used directly by
+ * real-time applications. Every TX/RX queue pairs has its own register set
+ * within a separate physical page. Thus, they are strictly separated from
+ * each other and can be operated without any synchronisation with the driver
+ * or any other TX/RX queue pair. tsnep_stream.c implements an interface for
+ * those TX/RX queue pairs. The real-time applications which use the TX/RX
+ * queue pairs can run in user space or on a dedicated CPU core with or without
+ * an operating system.
