Do they only offer support for newer chips, or are there any actual improvements and bug fixes implemented? Users should know whether updating the firmware will be of any use to them. Shiang Tu from ralink says [1] : "We always suggest to use latest firmware, because it's backward compatible and also has some enhancement, bug fix, or support of new chip. For rt5390 or newer chips, it shall upgrade the firmware to this version, or it may malfunction." What do you mean? Those files should be deleted from the linux-firmware package. There is no need to keep them around, as with the removal of the staging drivers, the last users of those files are gone. Only USB uses concatenation to support multiple chipsets, for PCI we have a single file that is written into the device. Stop repeating this nonsense, Ivo. If the firmware has been bundled in the Linux tree, that would be correct. For linux-firmware the policy is different. Ben.

They are used by staging drivers. Even if staging drivers are deleted, there are still a lot of old kernels running out there with staging drivers. And those kernels need these files (rt3070.bin rt3071.bin rt3090.bin) A link is a easy way to maintain retrocompatibility without disturb the guys running old kernels. -- To unsubscribe from this list: send the line "unsubscribe linux-wireless" in the body of a message to majordomo@vger.kernel.org More majordomo info at http://vger.kernel.org/majordomo-info.html

To be honest, I do not care whether they stay or go, as long as it is very clear that rt2x00 does not need, and will never need those files. If they stay, I would recommend simply not touching them at all, and leave them as they are, so that nothing changes for the people running the staging driver (at least with respect to these 3 firmware files). Larry, it might be best to update your changes to the WHENCE file to clearly state that these 3 files are only needed for the staging rt2860sta driver, up to kernel 2.6.39 (assuming that that staging driver will be removed in 2.6.40). --- Gertjan -- To unsubscribe from this list: send the line "unsubscribe linux-wireless" in the body of a message to majordomo@vger.kernel.org More majordomo info at http://vger.kernel.org/majordomo-info.html

Agreed. I'll add that as soon as I get the requested info about what changed from Ralink. I can test if linking rt3090.bin to rt2860.bin works for the PCI device, but I have no USB stick for testing. As a result, I'm inclined to leave those files intact for the foreseeable future. Off-Topic: What are some makes/models of USB sticks? If there are some inexpensive models on E-bay, I could add to my collection. Sorry, but how very ... Microsoft-y of Ralink. Something has changed, a bug, an improvement, but we are to guess what it is? Maybe if people knew how these firmware files affect different generations of chips, they'd knew how to maintain them better. I think this contributes to the mess here. -- To unsubscribe from this list: send the line "unsubscribe linux-wireless" in the body of a message to majordomo@vger.kernel.org More majordomo info at http://vger.kernel.org/majordomo-info.html

To be fair, I never did see what Intel changed in any of their firmware updates for CPUs, or what happened between iwlwifi-5000-2.ucode or iwlwifi-5000-5.ucode, so it isn't an Ralink-specific issue. (And yes, I know about forty-leven different reasons why Intel doesn't changelog their firmware either, and Intel is more likely to listen to their lawyers than to me ;)

In deed, restricted by the limited resources, Ralink didn't involve in the rt2x00 project development closely for long time and the rt2x00 project developers and free contributors only can get limited information from Ralink's open source code. I think that' why make the situation becomes a little bit complicate. Sorry for that. Now we try to work closely with rt2x00 project, we also will sumbit latest frimware to linux-firmware once have any updates. We certainly understand the problems of limited resources. Does Ralink have any documentation that you can share regarding the changes in rt2860.bin from revision 11, which is now in linux-firmware, to the current revision 34. The same information on the changes from revision 12 to revision 29 of rt2870.bin would also be useful. As you have seen in the E-mails, the details are requested for the acceptance of the new versions in linux-firmware.
